Steve Barker reviews Al Cisneros' DRAGONAUT DUB in December 2026 issue of THE WIRE

"Bassist/vocalist/songwriter Al Cisneros is a founding member of the stoner metal & doom metal bands Sleep, OM & latterly Shrinebuilder. But to dub fans, he's most likely best known for his appearance on the ZamZam Sounds 7" series, alongside his collaboration with The Bug on the Pressure release Rosin. I'm not sure if his old bandmates knew he was a closet dub reggae fan, even as his mantra-like low end basslines were readymade for a transfer into dub business, but this line from his marathon "Dopesmoker," "Drop out of life with bong in hand", surely makes the conversion to chalice easy enough. Both metal & dub fans can be satisfied with the three tracks on Dragonaut Dub, the title track a version to Sleep's "Dragonaut", the original's fantasy themed vocals here giving way to plenty of down-low Rickenbacker showing off. "Song for Dave Sweetapple" and its version are likely tributes to the Vermont metal band Witch's bassist who passed away two years ago. Cisneros's bass here is at its most mythic, with the sonics often sinking below the strings in the heaviest of buzzes, especially on the dread dub."
