"Though as committed to long-form contemplation as ever, NIS now seems a little groovier, achieving a kind of transcendental boogie that mixed the sonorities of Duke Ellington with the idiosyncratic eclecticism of Don Cherry and the deep-focus stasis of La Monte Young. From a certain perspective, NIS could be said to be reaching for the same mystical highs as Coltrane, with whose “Naima” the set began, only instead of running through every scale and what lies beyond, they’re paring down to some bare essential and figuring out what’s inside it, in the heart of its heart. By the end of the night, NIS could add another “m” word to their arsenal: “Majestic.” --Reed Jackson, Spectrum Culture (2025-10-18 concert review)
